The Frequent-C-Flyers were formed by five local citizens in 1981. Their goal was to establish the hobby of radio controlled airplanes in the Clearfield -Curwensville area and to provide help and instruction to anyone interested in the hobby. That same year the club became a chartered club member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). This is the national organization that governs the activities of the model airplane hobby. The AMA has provided services to the hobby such as working with the FCC to acquire radio frequencies specifically for model aircraft, working with the FAA and to provide liability insurance to the clubs, its members and to the land owner who provides property for model airports. The Frequent-C-Flyers club has a history of being very involved in community activities. We have put on flying demonstrations for organizations such as the Cub Scouts, Lions Club, and the Kiwanis. Other activities include participating at Airport Awareness Days in Clearfield and DuBois, a three-day Mall Show in Clearfield and a rubber band powered airplane contest for preschool and elementary aged children. Model airplanes offer some unique opportunities to the individual. Modeling is a great family activity. It has few limitations to the handicapped It has no age boundaries. It is a hobby perfect for people that don't have the income to learn to fly full scale aircraft. Model building and flying is a fun activity that has educational value such as math, science, working with tools, and the principles of aerodynamics. It is one of only a few activities that the young and old have the opportunity to work together as a team. The Frequent-C-Flyers is also a club that meets monthly for the purpose of management. We have elected club officers. We also have several experienced flight instructors. Our club gives flight instruction to anyone interested in learning to fly. This is donated time from the instructors and the pupil isn't charged any fees. The only requirement is that all members and students must be members of the AMA for insurance and land lease agreement purposes.
